A quick guide to using the InReach Mini with StaySafe

This is a quick guide on how to use the Garmin InReach Mini with the StaySafe system. If you have questions regarding how to configure and set up the device with StaySafe, please refer to our Set Up guide.

To ensure best performance, we recommend testing the device before you work alone and ensuring that the device has a clear line of sight to the sky at all times when used.

Key:

2. Status Icons:

These are the Status Icons that are presented by the InReach when it is carrying out an action.

3. Messages

One of the InReach's main features is Messages. You can send custom Messages from the device or choose from a selection of Preset Messages (to find out how to create presets, visit our set up guide).

You can send messages to Contacts on your device, you can send:

  1. Emails

  2. SMS

  3. InReach to InReach messages

Each of these messages will include a link to your current location.

Sending a Message:

  1. From the Messages page, select OK.

  2. Select New Message > Select Contacts.

  3. Choose recipients from your contacts list, and select Done.

  4. Select an option:
    • To start with a pre-written message, select Pick QuickText.
    • To write a custom message, select Write Message.

  5. When you have finished your message, select tick > Send.

Replying to a Message:

  1. From the Messages page, select OK.

  2. Select a conversation, and select Reply.

  3. Select an option:
    • To start with a pre-written message, select Pick QuickText
    • To write a custom message, select Write Message.

  4. When you have finished your message, select tick > Send.

Checking for Messages:

Your device listens for new messages at regular listen intervals.Satellites announce recently sent messages, and your device receives the message at the next listen interval.

NOTE: Your device must be in view of a satellite at the time of the listen to receive messages.

You can force a check for messages by manually checking for messages, sending a message, or sending a track point. During a check, your device connects to satellites and receives messages waiting to be sent to your device.

From the Mail Check page, select OK

Settings:

In the Messages Set-up, you can also choose "Ring Until Read", this changes the notification sound the InReach makes when you receive a new message.

The In Reach will also make an audible indication when a message is either sent, or fails to send.

4. Tracking

Starting a "Session" in StaySafe is the same as turning on Tracking when using the Garmin. You should enable tracking before you start your journey, this will ensure that StaySafe have some location information for you if you do trigger an alarm.

NOTE: ensure the device has clear line of sight to the sky and has sufficient battery before start your journey.

Enabling Tracking:

  1. From the main menu navigate to Tracking, select OK

Disable Tracking:

  1. From the main menu navigate to Tracking, select OK

  2. Select Stop Tracking, click OK

5. Panic/SOS

Initiating an SOS:

NOTE: While in SOS mode, the device cannot be turned off.

  1. Lift the protective cap (Fig 1) from the SOS button (Fig 2).

  2. Hold the SOS button.

  3. Wait for the SOS countdown.

The device sends a default message to the emergency response service or contacts with details about your location.

Canceling an SOS:

If you no longer need assistance, you can cancel an SOS after it is sent to the emergency response service.

  1. Lift the protective cap, and hold the SOS button.

  2. Select Yes
